Hey guys, don't really know how to word the title but I had a question about finding a place to stay when I go out west this coming July. I have a friend or two that may want to tag along and I was wondering what besides a hotel/motel could we rent to stay in that a 19 year old can actually rent? I had this problem up north, had to be 21 to get a room anywhere. Our duration of stay would be around a month. I was thinking maybe a condo or studio apartment but I don't know what age u have to be for those. Thought I'd ask here and do a bit of research to see what I could find. Thanks for the help!

College towns always have summer sublets available. Houses that college students want to maintain the lease but have few folks staying in them over the summer. I suppose other areas might have sublets available too. if you're coming with a friend, just dress like Mormons and all the good families out West will house you.

Maybe get your dad to sign a letter taking responsibility, and his contact. Not sure how it is in the states, but here it covers the concern when younger folks want to rent. I had to do it for my son. :wall: Have to keep your wild parties under control, then.

Some State parks have yurts. July in Oregon can be nice for camping but you are limited to 2 weeks at a campground.

KOA campgrounds with cabins can be a good deal if there is 2-3 folks. Prices vary from 40/night to 70 per night, not bad when split 3 ways.

Where are you heading? All through college I found rooms on Craigslist. Worked out pretty good, never signed a lease and never paid over 300 a month for a room. But, damn, did I live with some weirdos. The room renting thing is good because it gets you in with a group of people in a new town and can make it easier to make friends and have people to show you around.

Also Couchsurfing.org is a good community website to meet folks in new towns. I don't think that site is for long term places to stay though. It would be good, however, if you got to a town and didn't have a place to rent yet and you and your friends needed a place to stay for a few days or so while you hit the town looking for a house or room to rent.

lol squish, after we get out west and find a place to crash i'll be doing a bit of extra traveling around by myself hopefully, working with a few housers here and there, kinda using whatever place we find as a base camp if you will lol.

And apparently the 21 thing isn't a law, but its a policy the hotel/motel may choose to enact if they wish. I checked 3 or 4 in MA one night looking for one, up and down the cost spectrum, and all wanted me to be 21 to rent. I guess when we get there we could call around and check things out.

I'll definitly look into campgrounds and cabins. Someone also recommend I rent a studio apartment for a month when I was up north. Didn't really want to do that on my own, and plus, I never really looked into if I could could rent one for only a month. Anyone know of anything like that?

Heading out west, mostly exploring the west coast. Planning on sticking to CA, OR, and WA. Hopefully late July/early August to coincide with the ITCC in Portland.

I wish we had a place to offer you, Adrian. But Terri and I live in a small townhouse apartment. There's lots of parks and camping here, but that gets old after a while and in light of the times the parks may not even be open next summer. Damn it. Then there is the Redwoods River Resort on the Eel river.

I'll look around and see if I can find something in the meantime. Hang loose

1st youngster,
get a small credit card, most places are ok if they have a deposit or means to charge you for damages..( i did this at 18 in the army)
west coast has lots of campgrounds, and cabins, i like the koa idea, been there done it, not bad

you'll find places, come prepared to camp, and you'll find a couch or two along the way

i'll make the offer ....... it'll be warm then , throw a tent out in my pasture, use the house and whatnot as ya need, and explore from here for a few days if needed....i dk any other housers in humboldt...ya got to go south to ft bragg to see mr and mrs b, and north east to see willy....i can point ya to some nice state parks, and possibly a days work..

Thanks guys.

Stephen I may take u up on that. Mostly I just want to start exploring options since I had so much trouble in MA, want to see what my options are for this trip. We're still talking about where we want to go, etc.

As far as a credit card I have one, it'll be payed off by the time this trip comes around. Should be good enough to cover any deposits or anything like that if need be.

Thanks for the help Gerry. It's no big deal man sure we can find a place one way or another. I'll talk to my two friends again who may be tagging along, see if they have any ideas or friends over there.

I have a good sized tent. PM me with the dates you are thinking... I will talk to Kat and set it up. Warm food and showers. I wish I had more room in the house, but it is a tad crowded with 7 now
I am not in a position to make this a working vacation for you, but I can be a lay over. Yosemite is about a 45 - 60 minute drive to the valley floor.

If you are moving up the coast, say from San francisco, I see that Point Reyes (Point Reyes national seashore), has a hostel accommodation for 24 bucks per night. Nice area on the Tomales bay, beautiful drive from that point heading north along the coast.

A visit to Stephen would be well worth it.
I speak from experience.
A beautiful area and Stephen and Katy are great hosts.

BTW. are you going to try your hand on climbing the big trees?

If you are, PM me.

I know a some of gorgeus, park ranger free, climbing spots.

Also, having done it twice, I have some hard won experience to pass on.

Ohhhh yes Stig, most definitely gonna try to get up some big ones lol. Besides working with some great people, that's pretty much my whole motivation for this trip. Its been something I've wanted to do for years.
