A three day stay two weeks from this weekend in a cottage on the shore of Cranberry Lake in the Adirondack mountains for two easy flops and a bit of "vista" pruning. I am so psyched! Taking up the kayaks and the HO is just a few camps away with a major smoker and two fridges stocked with beer!

The lake is prime kayaking with the shoreline 90% state-owned owned and lots of islands and feeder stream exploring. I am so stoked! Pics forthcoming for the tr'ousers of course.

Well, the only thing I don't like is I never actually saw the trees yet, and the HO DID mention something about power lines, but oh well, just get 'er done, grab the beer, the little lady, the kayaks, and it's vacation time! :)

Well, the long weekend was even better than expected. The weather held up with fairly warm temps and little rain during the day, and it only dropped down into the forties at night. Perfect weather for a little hard work by day and comfy sleeping by night, though the rather voluminous amount of beer we drank by night's end would have ensured that anyway.

The beech that needed removed did get a little tricky, though, as it backleaned pretty good toward another camp from the desired direction of fall, but I really didn't feel like climbing the tree and having to rope some limbs down before pulling the spar over. No matter, just rope a limb in the crown it to another tree toward the direction of fall and tension the rope real tight with a couple of butterfly knots, and then pound in some wedges. Problem was the tree still set back pretty good on the back cut. Finally, I had to rope the crown with another rope the same way, and not having any mechanical pulling devices, my girlfriend and I had to shimmy up both the ropes towards the tree and bounce up and down until the tree finally rocked upright and came down where it was supposed to. It's quite amazing the tension you can put on the ends of a good, taut line with a couple hundred pounds of weight toward the middle of it. Gail did happen to mention her rope was the one in the direct line of fall, but hmmm, I thought that was just coincidence. :D
