Being able to play improvisational (right word?), seems like an ultimate
form of expression, really being in the moment. I envy people who can do that on a high level.

I used to play a Japanese classical instrument, the Shakuhachi, a bamboo flute. Went so far as to get a teaching credential for it. The music has Buddhist applications, and I stopped playing because it was like being a monk alone in some cave in the wilderness, made me feel lonely.

I am thinking a Bamboo flute would have a very lonely, haunting tone to it.
Never took it out and just jammed with other instrument players?

Yes, I jammed with it a bit, and used to get together with the ladies playing Koto, a classical stringed instrument, There are some people playing jazz with that type of flute.

JUst listened to some stuff on the net w/Koto & the Shakuhachi. wanted to see if thed Koto wass what I thought it was. Guessed right. The flute had a much higher timbre than I thought it would have.

Shakuhachi means eight shaku, an ancient system of measurement that describes the flutes length, and gives it's name. Although the most common, there are also shorter and longer designed ones, where the tone differs.

Bluegrass it is. Started out with that. Went on to rock/blues/top 40/country.....retired from stage couple of years ago and went back to my roots so to speak. Mostly just campfires, jams, & table pickin' now.
Occasionally go into the big city to an open mic night.

do you like that kind of Jazz ? I could never get into it.. That style just never seemed to have a hmmmm... I dont know maybe a meaning to it? kind of just rambles but , thats my opinion.

I did and I can still enjoy it, but my tastes where moving more towards hard rock and between that and everything else a youth gets into the sax was laid down for awhile. Now when I play my mouth suffers within minutes.

Bluegrass.....my favorite band was Jim and Jesse and the Virginia boys, but there are/were a lot of great bands out there. I saw them once, and to say they rocked would be an understatement.

WWB....Yeah, the McRenolds brothers could definitely do some great stuff. Two friends of mine have toured with them playing banjo. Both are awesome pickers from MI. I'm not sure but Loyd may still be playing for Jesse (Jim passed away a few years ago RIP).

I love bluegrass, I'm just not too familiar with it.

MB....If your listening to Dan Tyminski (singer of Man of constant sorrow) your listening in the right direction.

WWB...There Are a lot of kids who pick that well in 'Grass, it's a family thing and you grow up with it. All they have to do now is learn that the instruments are only there to back up the vocals. The singing & harmonies is really where its at.

Glad you liked it MB.

I saw Doc Watson and his son, Merle, once. Doc is a given, but Merle picked really strong too that day. Tragic that he died so prematurely, rolling a tractor I believe.

Yup, if I remember correctly he was pulling stumps.

Got a chance to be in a backstage jam with Doc once, up in Mole Lake, Wisconsin. It was a thrill I'll never forget. Others in the jam included John Hartford (Banjo), Ricky Skaggs (Mando), Roy Husky Jr. on bass, and a few others from Ricky's band and the band I was helping out at the time.

Wow, that must have been an incredible experience, playing with a true legend.

Actually, the way Merle died, it was a freak thing, and I especially remember it because he was doing some woodworking late at night, and injured his arm, I believe. I seem to recall that he hopped on a tractor and went over to a neighbors to try to get some help, but they wouldn't answer the knocking on their door at such an hour, though it seems odd. I think that he only had the use of his one arm or so, and on the way out of their place, he rolled the tractor down an embankment.

It sure was cool to see Doc and his son play together, a real good memory now.

I stand corrected. Been quite a while ago now.
Doc has always been one of my favorite singers. Great haunting voice on some of the old ballads he did.
If you ever get a chance, you might like to listen to the swing he played on the electric guitar. He is truly an awesome musician and singer, and down to earth person.

I would like to hear some of that swing. I'll have to look it up. Swing is always fun to play.

My bother and i used to play a lot of blue grass. Him on the banjo and I played the guitar. he was really good and sort of gave it up and went for the madolin insead. Unfortunatly he lives in arizona now and I'm in Cali.so we dont get the oportunity like we used to.

I have an old picker friend who is a professional player, Carvel Bass is his name. If he ever comes to your area, check him out. He was in Country Joe and the Fish, when they first started out.

some "picks" from yesterday.
