I know this topic is just about beat to death on most tree forums, but I was wondering what length you all like in a lanyard. I have my new 8' one I spliced up at the recent splicing class, but I also have a newly purchased ISC Swivel that I've been dying to make a lanyard with. My 8' serves me well on most climbs, but I'd like to start learning different tricks for lanyards, like as an short SRT tie in, and that sort of thing. I'm thinking somewhere between 16 and 20 feet.

Also, what are some useful tricks to go along with a lanyard.

Lots of guys like those long lanyards. I find them a PITA. I like my 7' lanyard and have never liked climbing with anything longer. I don't like it catching under my feet as I move through the tree. I rarely need to lanyard into huge fat wood so I don't have to worry about it being too short. If some wierd situation develops where I need it slightly longer, I can clip a 4' loop runner or two on the end.

If you have a 20' rope, that isn't a lanyard unless you're climbing redwoods. It's a short lifeline. ;)

I have a 12' I use most of the time and it gets in my way more than I'd like... I'm probably gonna shorten it. I also have 7' I use for quick climbs like pines, easy prunes or hangers.

I tried a 20' for a while and hated it. I'd rather double crotch with my lifeline.

I like to clip a biner on the very back of my saddle and run the tail of my longer lanyards through it so it dangles behind me like a monkey's tail, this keeps it out of the way much better.

I am too young to be forgetting things so fast. I just made up a new lanyard and I wanna say its 14', I think. I made two prussic's out of 3mm cord that attach from my lanyard to my saddle. Like Skwerl, I hate tripping over my lanyard so I try and keep it up higher.

I've been playing around with a retractable lanyard design for a while now because I too get frustrated when my lanyard is just the right length to either step through or get my knee caught up in it!

I've heard it said that very annoying problems are simply opportunities to make money by solving them.

M y long one is 20-25 feet long. I'll either tie the excess in a knot and clip it behind me, or stuff it into a small sack, which will often keep it contained till extra is needed.

A wire core lanyard I presume RB?

Mine is about 12'. I also can't stand having the ends getting caught up in stuff so I keep a ditty bag on that side of my saddle the the tail of the lanyard lives in. It feeds out just fine when I need it, and it only takes a swift motion to stuff the whole lanyard in the bag when I don't need it.

The ditty bag went a long way towards making my saddle setup more streamlined.

For climbing, I use a length of climbing line that starts off roughly 18' long. Tie 2 knots and it's down to 16' or so. As it gets nicked or otherwise messed up, I cut it back until it gets too short.

I have a 6-8' lanyard for the manly lifter.

I also do the ditty bag.

I've never seen him in a tree.... that's a damn big tree he's under in that avatar though.

He is right though. Add lenght for the knots, they each, (Scaffold) take about 12-15 inches of rope. So that 18 foot is now 16 or less.

Mine are lenght before knots 12.11 (i did not a 13 foot cut) and about 16.

I guess you can also use a splice on one end ??? (is that true) not with a snap BUT a biner?

18' of 5/8 cable core with rope snaps.
'Cause I like em long and stiff you ask?:/:
Yes I will be also purchasing a smaller 8-10 foot in the near future. I don't find it as much of a pain as Brian. Just tie it off a back loop and continue on. A long flip line/lanyard makes for a great positioning device as well :)

For climbing vs flying the lift.

I'm fairly sure I've never spiked up a tree that size. I said the lanyard ends up being 16', and 16/3.14= 5', and the tree in the picture was every bit of that. I fail to see wtf difference it makes though. I thought alpha males beat their chest over who had the biggest phallic member?

Blinky, you saw me in a tree in Andersonville, I think.

But, incase you didn't, here you geux:
