You can manipulate the segment length by choosing either a shallow or deeper undercut. Of course that will either make wedging easier or harder depending on which way you choose.

Yes, @Burnham and I discussed it before. More undercutting, under the center of gravity sooner, but less wedge leverage. On this back weighted oak, more undercut and lots of wedges made it easier than I expected.
