My hp pavillion went to the shop last week to be cleaned. Now the hp movie player won't work:( any ideas? It wants to play on windows media player but then that doesn't have a decoder or something. I can't even find the player

Try opening up Windows Defender.
Click Tools then Software Explorer.
In the Category window choose Startup Programs.
Look for HP Quickplay and see if it has been disabled.

Not sure if this will help but it's worth checking.
(I like my HP)

You can go to the Add \Remove programs and see if it is still there.
then go to the folders icon in the control panel, double click it, click on the "file types" tab and scroll down to DVD highlilght DVD and it should show which program it uses to play a DVD and if it has the wrong one it should give you the option to select the right one. If your hp program isn't there then I would take it back to the guys. This is xp right? If this is Vista just slap me and tell me to shut up.

Jason, it's xp. And Skwerl got it, hp quick play.

Brian, where do I find windows defender?

I'm running Vista, it's listed in the installed programs (from the Start button). I'm not sure if XP will be the same, been a while since I've run it.

Theres a windows messenger, movie maker and media player. Thats in the all programs button

You may have just lost the link to the desktop shortcut and so you need to check in the "add/remove programs" part of the control panel to see if you just lost the link or maybe you lost the whole thing.

So I go to hp.com I assume and search for what? Sorry, this is definatly not my strong suit!

Glad ya got it; This link to Free-codecs.com can straighten out a lot of stuff too. In the left column you might also notice some replacement players; all cleaner and lighter. Media Player Classic is more a no-frills of windows version, and some stuff that gets blocked because of media rights still plays. The replacements for Real Player and Quicktime don't have advertising, and don't load themselves into your start-ups whenever you use them. This makes for faster boots; and then that background process isn't 'carried' the whole time you are running; potentially slowing down sys, especially older one.

I think Stephen is talking about having a restore disc Willie. If you have a big failure it can restore your operating system and have all the right drivers for your HP system.
