Thought to start this here due to the massive derail that has started on the Tradeing post.

I am mostly interested in a kask due to the opptions available with it. I don't want to wait till March for all the new stuff that petzl has. Besides I want a tinted visor so I don't have to wear my put overs on my glasses. I have also heard that kask will replace any defective helmets after they finish with the fix.

What do you mean derail?

This may have the impact rating your looking for.

LOL "I see your swarts is as big as mine!"

So you don't wear a helmet now Dan? Why does having your own gig or not change your need for a helmet? Why don't you need one at your current climbing gig? I'm confused by the apparent lack of logic. Maybe I missed something?

Dan, did you know Petzl's come with standard slots to accept Peltors and other like muffs? no need for that rinky-dink adaptor ;)

Yeah I didn't want to be the TB'er who came in bitching about Kasks in that thread. You know what I think though, the Kask has been a disappointment.

They really got the fit right, it's the most comfortable climbing helmet I've ever worn. It feels strong and safe and unlike the Vertex, the Kask stays put when you crank the little dial down.
The muff bracket thing has been lame but I figured Stein or Kask or somebody would come through and now, I'm hoping somebody will come through on the liner too. I can't afford to send a $150 helmet off for 4-6 weeks for an identical replacement with potentially identical problems.

I'm neutral on the visor. Mine is clear, I don't use it much except on spars and falling.

It's no big deal that a new helmet design has some problems, but the manufacturer needs to be on the ball and have a remedy pretty fast. It seems like Kask couldn't care less. It's all the more exasperating because the basic design is really nice; materials problems can be fixed. I'm sure the fact that it's safety gear and comes from offshore slows things down but some communication would be cool.

There was a hanger I didnt see in a tree, and I jumped the limb off that was supporting it. Well it blasted me in the head, and right then I thought of getting some head gear. My gig is going to be sub-climbing for others, and I want to have all the ducks in a row. If "they" want me to have it I will. Don't know if its petzl or kask yet I'm going to compare them side by side and make my decision then.

Have you looked at a Pacific kevlar.
Best helmet I've ever owned.
For climbing, that is.

The Petzl is a good, inexpensive helmet and I would recommend it until you are in a position to upgrade (if you so desire). But a $75 helmet with top and side impact protection versus a $250 helmet with only top protection and the option of buying a matching $60 visor isn't much of a comparison for somebody starting out with a long shopping list and minimal funds.

I wonder just how common the problem with Kask helmets really is. We've sold a bunch of them at Wesspur and I haven't had a single report of any problems yet. But the thread at TB makes it seem like everybody who bought one has had the problem.

Personally, I love the Pacific kevlar helmets. No polycarbonate plastic shell helmet will last as long or be as protective. They are also the only helmet on the market that will sell all the internal parts separately, so I can replace all the nylon webbing, brow pad, and plastic ratchet knob when they start to stink. They also are compatible with Peltor muffs and/or visor, but this is the wire mesh visor, not the clear plastic one. And they cost less than Petzl or Kask. IMO, the only downside to them is that they aren't vented. But that's not a real big deal to me because it doesn't get very hot here in the Pacific North Wet. I don't GAF what the thing looks like. When I'm wearing mine, it looks goofy because it sits up pretty high, but it is still secure and doesn't wobble even with 27 DB muffs on it.

 I can only imagine

....and you're right, I do hope I look that good when I get to your advanced age:P

Back on topic. The pacific is a great helmet I'm on my second one. The first one I had had metal screws which eventually rusted out but not before I got at least five years out of it. I keep one set of gear in my work truck and one in my personal truck, pacific is at work, kask in personal.
