I understand all that, but my stainless Ruger and the one I was in the process of buying weigh about the same and are of the same size and caliber (.270). My stainless is the second generation, whereas the other was first, but still, that doesn't seem like it would make a difference. I have a Stevens model 200 in 7mm-08 that kicks worse than any 7mm-08 I've ever shot, and my New England Handi-Rifle in 7mm-08 kicks worse than either of my Remington Model 7's, also in 7mm-08, even though it weighs noticeably more. I've always heard that Savages/Stevens were some of the worst when it comes to recoil.
 
Stock ridigity also plays a role, especially the recoil pad. Limbsaver recoil pads are pretty effective.
