We beat it into groundies, you always pay attention to a climbers rope whenever pulling brush, especially by a chipper. Most times if we are that close to a chipper, we wont allow it to be used until that tree is done. Pile it up for clam if you must.

My worst fear when climbing was never the tree, but the incompetent and ignorant brush draggers wandering around beneath me. I had way more close calls due to groundies than I ever had due to compromised trees.

We have very few "groundies" .......... we have many climbers who some days climb and other days work the ground. New hire groundies are usually encouraged to at least try climbing (most want to anyway) when the job permits. Because of this our team of workers is built mostly of climbers (to some extent). This is beneficial because, even the "new" climbers quickly become aware of the minor things that can either irritate (or hurt/ kill) a climber aloft. I must give kudos to the guys that work the ground for me and my teams, as they are stellar to say the least.

It seems often the case that good groundies in these parts are ex something else, having done whatever it was on a professional level. Though they may be older, they have a good understanding about learning to work smart, and importantly, want to work because they like it. Things to talk about during breaks too. :)
