A lot of folks send emails without including the person's name in the top line, like you normally do in regular written correspondence. I do it as well in quick exchanges back and forth, and sometimes, though a communication will start out with a Dear..., or just the person's name, at some point in the exchange, the manner gets abandoned.

Sometimes it just kind of bugs me when people don't include my name in an email, or maybe I should say that I can't quite get used to it. I might be just old school or something.... still remembering Mrs. McGilakudy's eight grade English class....

What do you folks think about this, is there a form of manner on it, or anything is OK? The internet makes for a lot of impersonal stuff, it's becoming an impersonal world. Hate to be picky, though.....

Thanks.

I would think it would be courteous, as a sign of respect, to include the intended parties name in letters. emails. or any other formal type correspondence. Where it wouldn't be needed is in IM, texting, or those sort of one on one communications.
Forums fall somewhere in between all that.
Just my 2 cents.

I've always figured that initially it's a letter, but after one iteration of replies, there is less necessity for a name - you already know who it is (and, presumably, you used the name in the first email or reply).

Also, it depends on the person you are corresponding with - I'm much more "formal" with clients than with friends.

I had some tough business dealings getting chainsaws from the states that I payed for and they never arrived. Finally got it sorted out after a really long time and a fair degree of stress from the matter. The dealer would correspond via email with me and never include my name, which particularly pissed me off. I got irritated and told him about it. He used my name once and then went back to hid usual way of corresponding.

Dear Jay,

I always use a salutation in email. To me, it's a typed letter.

Sincerely yours,
Chip

My esteemed Treehouse Colleagues,

Please understand that the aforementioned douchbaggery is quite appropriate in light of our mutual douchbaggedness and we will not cease nor desist in douching one another's bags until this thread is derailed by one of our douchebag peers.

Yours in douchbaggery, I shall remain,

Chip the Alabama Douchebag

Dear Alabama Douchebag,

Fear not; for I have indeed douched your bag and then bagged your douche.

Your fellow douchebag from Massachusetts,
Erik

I do, and don't include names. I guess it depends on the type of email

what does bother me is people not stripping emails down to make them clean.

for example, including all attachments I sent in a previous email
or..
simply forwarding emails without checking quality of links included or stripping them of all the other addresses the email was sent to

Dear Frans,

While we appreciate your input on the topic at hand, was it so earth-shatteringly profound that it needed to be posted twice?:D :P ;)

Only one response to this question will be necessary.:)

Thank you for your time,

Mike:)

Dear Mike,

You did me a favor by asking Frans (only once) the question that earnestly and honestly needed to be asked concerning why some people ask the same question repeatedly (for Frans it was only twice). Perhaps we are perceived to be hard of hearing (or hard of something)?

Eternally grateful,

Gary

Dear Jay,

See what you started! I hope you feel adequate amounts of shame and remorse.:D

Benevolently,

Mike
