Just wondering, what is the downside for the birds by not building those nesting platforms? Finding large enough stable areas to build nests upon is problematical?

they are lazy Jay, plain and simple...;)

I think ol Ben was right, the wild turkey would be a much better national bird than an eagle, they are survivors, tough to kill and damn table fare :)

since we don't have one, let's pick one ...I peregrine falcon would be cool, fast, hard-hitting and beautiful, or a raven maybe? my Grandma's people held them in great esteem, very wise

Should be the Canada Goose, breeds in the Arctic and winters in the Gulf! Ummmm, Jay that is the Southern attired Chickie!!!!

geese suck...dirty f-ing shit machines! :(

trumpeter swans though, they are gorgeous, beautiful call too

Cary - if I built a platform like that in a tree in my front yard, I could rent it out for at least $300 per month to some college kids. That is one stout nest! It might need to be though, as eagles simply keep on adding to their nests every year of their approx 25 year life span. As a result, they can grow to incredible sizes. I heard on the radio that the largest nest ever measured weighed almost 1 ton.

The European grey eagle will happily consider a 1½ ton heavy pile of branches, twigs, eagle shit and fish bones a nest.
That is why they only nest in old big trees here.

Crow's nests are something odd to see. The crap they manage to utilize. Coat hangers seems a favored building material. Can't say that they are pretty to look at.
