I recently found out that a friend of mine didn't know his blood type: he had no idea at all. This amazed me. I've just always assumed by the time (or waaaay younger) a person reached adulthood they knew their blood type.

Don't be shy now, tell de trut.

It's cold out and Imma bored.

It was suppose to be a poll, Brian. I deleted that thread and started over.

Who voted no? Mrs. B? I was gonna make the votes public but I forgot.

No OTC test that I'm aware of - you have to have blood drawn.

It's in my annual blood work report, no doubt. I don't pay any attention to it, and don't recall. Any reason to?

Wow, me too. I figured anybody working with saws should know their blood type. I've got a semi-rare type (O neg) so the red cross gives me a few calls every year to donate.

I figured it was about like knowing your SSN or ICE information. If rescue asks and you're conscious, you can answer.

I don't know mine.
To me it is not useful information.

It seems like useful info if you're in need of blood (they don't have on-the-spot testing) or if you donate.

Trust me - it's useful information. Kinda like if you're allergic to penicillin or not. I guess you don't know that, either.

I won't accept blood or organs, so I don't donate either.

Yup, know mine, doesn't mean anything.

If rescue asks and you're conscious, you can answer.

There are very few times a blood bank in the hospital will issue uncross matched blood. Way to many antibodies out there that can create serious issues later in recovery.

I think? I am A-, we did this in science class back in middle school, but I can't be for sure, it's been a long time!

It must be because of me being a vet??? Or an AF brat? I don't remember when I became aware of it. Probably boot camp, I'd guess.

20+ years ago they started finding there was much more to blood than just type. Studies showing that even thought you where given the same blood type your body rejected it and that is what helped kill you. Every year more and more info is learned about this field.
The military makes a big thing about knowing your blood type. But my wife and others that work with her have found many that where incorrectly typed by the military also.

Wow, is that a religious stance?

I went to school with a couple of kids who lost their mom because she wouldn't accept a blood transfusion. I was always amazed at that.

No, I am not the slightest bit religious.

In this country we are turning into "the living dead", Dying has become taboo, so we are keeping people alive way beyond what is right.

My grandmother was a good example. She had lived at home, done everything for herself, cleaning , cooking , shopping etc until at the age of 94 she had a small brain aneurysm and fell over.
Instead of letting her die of the pneumonia that she got from lying for 2 days on her kitchen floor, our brave doctors felt a pressing need to keep her "alive" as a half blind vegetable for another 1½ years.

We have a thing called a "life testament" where you can state that you don't want medical treatment if you become a hopeless case, she had made one of those and send it to the register, the docs completely ignored it.
In this country once you get into the medical system, you'll be lost.

So I have decided not to let the medical system take me hostage, I'll rather be in charge of my own life and death.

No cancer treatment, blood transfusions or organ transplants for this kid.

I like the idea of a bullet much better.
