YEP, it is really expensive.. it can break a window, open a hydant, drag a guy out of a building, open a fire hose, help you pull the hose, etc... there are a bunch of vids on youtube

it does have some kind of auto lock/break setup though for desending...

Not what I'd choose for escaping a burning building in the middle of the night.
Too complicated and easy to screw up in a panic.
I'll stick with my RQ8

That's a nice looking tool, Stig. Do just you use it for descending on a single line or for other apps too? Like the blurb says, it looks easier to use than a basic 8.

I wonder why just firefighters?

edit - whoa, I just saw the video. Now I can dig it.

Now I want it, just for the water meter function.

Both actually.
But single line is where it shines, because if you start going down too fast it is so easy to take a wrap around the horns to add friction.

Burnham turned me on to RQ8 when I was going to the Sequoias/Redwoods first time, for those long single line descents.

Looks pretty neat, Stig. My only complaint would be the possibility of it hanging up on stuff in the tree. I use a medium size regular 8 now, that I always have with me. In addition, I have one of those small 8's that I keep on a screw link on the back of my saddle. I keep it there for a backup, and I have used it in a pinch to lower a limb or two out. I used to carry one of the rescue 8's with ears, but it seemed it was always hanging on something. Of course it had ears on both sides which made it a definite in brushy trees, whereas this one only having the one ear probably wouldn't have that problem.

Whutchu talkin' 'bout? You saw me use that unused handline a few months ago. And it doesn't hang like an ear on a rescue-8.

A GriGri is the cats meow for long single line descents, IMHO.

As is a rack, as Burnam has also turned us on to.

That was my take on it as well... K.I.S.S. would be a much better principle in an emergency situation.
