I tried once to splice an access rope. It has a less number of strands from the core (twisted parallel strands) than from the cover (braided). I wanted to glue together by pairs those in excess to match the other set. Bad idea. When I wanted to melt the tips to weld the strands from cover to the strands from core, all I got with the glued ones is burning and a very weak weld.
