We have a 1980's Chipmore that has 4 betls that go from the clutch to the drum. The pulleys that are on both ends have slots for 6 belts. Do we need to get 2 more or is 4 what needs to be on it?
Thanks for the input. The machine runs just fine as is, so I will let well enough alone.
I do have another question about the air filter. It is the type with oil in the bottom of it. Is that just plain motor oil? If so what weight and how often do you need to change it? If not regular motor oil, what is it?
30wt SAE non detergent motor oil, changed at each engine oil change interval.
That is the standard oil and change rate, can't imagine that you have some thing different.
You don't have to buy 'special' oil for the oil bath air filter. Just use some of the same oil you put in the motor. The air is drawn through the oil so any dirt particles stick to the oil as the bubbles pass through. It's not a complicated or high tech system.
Yes standard detergent motor oil will work, but you need to change it more often. The detergent holds the dirt particles in suspension in the oil. Where as the non det oil allows the dirt to settle at the bottom of the reservoir and the clean oil to be drawn back up into the mesh to wash the dirt back down.
Let be give you a little word of advice and take it for what it's worth .
If you need to replace the belts buy them as a set of either matched belts or a multi belt assembley .They cost more than just standard vee belts but give much better service .
If in the event a belt fails only use a non matched belt for a short period of time until the whole set can be replaced .
How bout a little appreciation derail for c n' d chippers?? I ran a vermeer 1600 and it sucked- a high pitched scream that went right through your earmuffs when it was at full throttle, and it cut my bosses fingers off when he was unclogging it. But later I ran a whisper chipper and it was a heck of a machine- quiet, simple, effective. Actually kind of fun to chip with.
It is a fun machine. Ours is just a backup so we take it out only when we want (assuming our 1250 isn't broke) and I always look forward to it. I sure wouldn't want to take it out for a large honeylocust removal. Regardless, I will be hard pressed to ever get rid of our Chipmore.
My first chipper purchase was a Fitchburg much like the mitts merrill I had line clearance jobs and for those it worked flawless.still have it in Vt but I will have to heli coil a plug on the old wisconsin.
