I'm a little late this year. I have been throwing the idea around about getting a large evergreen tree and decorating it for my town, for some years.

They beat me to it this year. I am going to start the planning for next year and see if I can get some money and people together to have a really nice event.

The problem I see is finding a good tree, getting permission to get the good tree and then the logistics of moving tree to my location.

Where should I start looking for trees, and what species would be a descent christmas tree?

No chief we got a wild Idea that it would look cool for a Captain Morgan pose.

I actually sent that in to the pose off this year. :D

Christmas tree farms always have trees that are too large to harvest for the open market.
What a cool idea to donate / decorate one for all to enjoy !!!
Betcha could get a farm to pitch in, given they're allowed advertising ?!?

Every year we get calls from people who want to 'donate' their tree. We can't take them 'cuz we have to take the one from Nova Scotia. It gets seriously expensive in a hurry to put up a big tree (crane, trucking, guy wires, labor, etc.)

on a side note, the rep from N.S. tells us they are having trouble finding big trees that people are willing to part with...

Yeah I saw some pictures and explanations of how long and how many engineers it took my town to get there christmas tree up. What a bunch a windbags.
It took an entire crew of 10 or more people to stick a 27 foot tree to the ground. They dug a 6 ft deep hole and put the butt end in that.

I had ideas of making a giant stand that bolts to the tree with turnbuckles to adjust the plumb.

I like Christmas. A giant tree stand sounds unstable though or would have to be so big to be stable that it would detract from the tree. Just thinking out loud.

Back when I was still dealing with my family I hated Christmas. But now that they leave me alone I just don't G A S.

you boys are like the Grinch.......

I don't dig the hype, but hangin' out with friends and fam reflecting on the past year ain't that bad.

Finally got my Christmas lights put up. Quite a job, but I like to go all out to impress the neighbors and what not.

What do y'all think? Pretty awesome, huh? :D

Sounds like it would be a hell of a lot cheaper to plant a tree with a spade and just chip it on new years day. It only takes a couple of guys with a 90" spade an hour or two to pop one in the ground, and we've moved some serious dbh stuff too, especially if it's softwood.
