Once the tree has a systemic infection, it will always grow back. Removing what you can is better for the tree than not removing it.

I will be maintaining the trees Guy. From my experience... the tree can eventually win more often with our help than not.

nah no test just leading up to the suggestion of painting the cuts to suppress resprouting. but if repruning/monitoring is already planned on, suppression is less critical. nevermind!

Where I had to shave it off, I applied spray type pruning sealer (like tar). My past experience with this has shown me it is very effective..

HO next door to my cabling job (also a client with a really pretty Japanese maple I prune) fetched me at the end of the job and asked me to help this little blue oak out.
It was on the roof (against fire code) and really had a lot of dead wood in it. She really loved a live oak I had just done for her in her front yard and thought this little tree would look better for it.
Seeing I had a short day planned next door taking out a tree over the horse fence.... Rob and I jumped on this and had it all done in a couple hours.

Looks good, but...with all the cuts made in the lower part of the tree, did that pruning increase the risk of failure?

One... I hardly cut anything low in the tree save for dead and epi...
Two.... young tree, old cuts from previous landscaper were compartmentalising well save for poor cuts made that I corrected (stubs).
Biggest cut made on that tree was the one branch that was literally on the roof. 3" limb taken back to the next node. Should be no issue.
Tree should thrive better with more light and air flow.
