Brian...just order a cheap viel you can wear over existing clothes....honey bees cant sting through nitril gloves either...but they are hot.

How many times a year a you finding honey bees?

4-5 times per year it seems. I'm not worried about spending a little more for something decent, a single job without getting stung would more than pay for a decent jacket/ hood. I have all sorts of gear I carry on the truck and only use a few times per year, but it pays for itself when I need to pull it out.

I've shown this pic before, our Giant Asian Hornet, the largest hornet/wasp on the planet. One stung me in the middle of my back, through my shirt, when I was out trimming a hedge. The pain was rather severe for two days, but the incredibly intense itching for almost a week after, was the worst part. Severe risk if you get stung again within two years, they say.

They regularly fly into my shop, but usually immediately go up high looking for an exit, and I hear them buzzing around up there for two days before they croak. If they come down and start messing with me, cruising around like the Bismarck, I get out the carb cleaner spray, which shrivels them up nearly instantly.

They can decimate a beehive, being meat eaters.

This one must be smoked or dead, no fool would put a spry one on his hand.

I guess just about every living organism on earth has a use .I wasn't so sure about wasps until I heard they live on corn borer larva . Pretty handy being right smack dab in the middle of corn country .

By the way,a wasp cannot fly with wet wings, they just walk around mad as a hornet .:|: A little squirt with a garden hose knocks the wind right out of their sails .

Got to watch one of these guys in action the other day looking for Tarantulas... Never been hit by one but I have heard it's painful... That one you have there Jay looks like a meat bee on steroids... I would not even want to know what that would feel like and I have been hit by scorpions. :P

all you need for those is a badmiton racquet...8).

Brian, I have a old veil and helmet I'll give you. You'll have to get gloves....but most anything will work. I dont wear gloves because lifting frames is tricky...and most time the bees are cool( good weather...etc).

During a removal...they WILL be pissed off. Crawling bees are your biggest concern, dont forget the duct tape on you pant legs. Then, do a complete bee check before you unsuit. Blow them off with your blower.

Best thing is to find a beekeeper type to help you.....gotta be some in your area. Check with the extension agent. I guess there have been some african bees near you.....so take caution with that.

Being in the bucket, I haven't had any problem with them getting up my pants legs. And I haven't worn gloves either, I just keep my hands moving. But the loaner jacket I've been wearing doesn't have anything to hold the screen out away from my face and it's too hot to work in for long. I certainly appreciate the offer for the veil and helmet though, I'll put them to good use. Be sure to include a jar of honey in the box. :D

I'll send you some pics of it( it's budget fo' sho')....you should tape up if the bees get thick....especially when temps are cool and they wont fly.....then they crawl UP!

no honey yet...building year for me. I have not decided to rob them. Next year should be banner though. second honey flow is right now(sourwood). Rain is hampering thier efforts, but 8 strong hives going into winter is my goal.

bill....whos that?8)

here the veil.....same one this dude is wearing

Jay,
if I had those buzzing around my house, my wife would make mount a couple of AAA turrets on the roof :):)

Hey John- I got the veil today, thank you very much. I'll definitely put it to good use. The hat needs a little doctorin' but that will take about 5 minutes. I even have a box of the right size rivets to reattach the headband. This will really come in handy on my next bee tree.
:)

cool......next is a card board NUC box for catching the bees...easy peasy:D
