    How'd it go today?

If they make a paper one my broke hillbilly self would be cutting up a cereal box  i hear you tho, that's a ton of work for a failed gasket, so i might be tempted to wait too. I'm decent at cutting them, for me a gasket hole punch set is key, and i use dykem to lay them out. I want to...

    What's the gasket material?

I'll take that over the alternatives, pretty much everything is like that.

We have a shop about an hour away that rebuilds in house, i love them. I've considered learning myself tho for the convenience, would be super handy to be able to fix that stuff correctly and then not have to bother anymore.

Because the engine has to be tied together with the entire drive train to the wheels before it's attempted to start, something usually only possible with a manual.

    How'd it go today?

Nope, has to be a real manual.

I would do a voltage check once you get it running, that sounds like it could be a battery or alternator problem, or maybe a solenoid. Around here in salt land the grounding cables will also corrode, so cleaning them can make a huge difference too

    How'd it go today?

As i get older I'm slowly coming to the realization that taking a few more things off to make more room is the way to go, much less swearing and bleeding knuckles and it usually goes faster.

I hate it when i mess up too, it's rarely a good thing.

    How'd it go today?

Very good question, and yes that's a consideration. The bolt is skinny while the tapped hole is in a thick section of solid steel, so basically the tapped hole wins until the threads strip, the bolt stretches while the block stays still. The tapped hole is also significantly deeper than a nut...

Do those get the bolts through the knives? Mine just clamp it, no holes in the knives so if it loosens it could fly, a through bolt would likely fall out first (still bad, but the through bolt is likely safer). Can you get to the backside of the bolt? Is it a nut or a tapped hole? Mines a blind...

    How'd it go today?

Yeah that's not very tight then, that's not even enough for a 3" flange with a flexatalic gasket. How small of a bolt is that?

    How'd it go today?

They didn't, the dry friction is more than enough to cause galling, and the static and sliding friction coefficients are too far apart. The lubricated friction is much less, so it will require far less torque to achieve the bolt stretch, aka preload, and since the static and sliding friction...

    How'd it go today?

To be clear, you have to use something or you cannot torque the bolt correctly.

    How'd it go today?

You absolutely should use something, and i use it on most sealing surfaces as well. Bolts are tightened to a set torque, basically you can calculate the squeezing force of a bolt by the torque (it's an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder), and what you're actually doing is stretching the...

    How'd it go today?

A drop will cover a tabletop! But the reality is that it works, and works great. There's flanges bolted together that we loosen after decades of service, covered in rust and paint, been through countless heating and cooling cycles, but they usually come right apart. I tell apprentices that...

    How'd it go today?

When you think you found it try the pressure washer and shop vac, easiest way to daylight it. You can make small diameter deep holes so it doesn't take a lot to dig, and you do a very narrow trench. But then again after admiring all of your pictures of equipment you probably got a guy with a vac...
