For long boring cuts like that, you need to start way back from the hinge. Start with the belly of the saw to the rear, then flip it over to bring the cut forward to where you want the back of the hinge to be. Keeping a long bore level is hard. You might try practicing on some stumps before...

I do that quite frequently to pull out broken hung up Douglas fir branches on our place. Sometime just the throwline works, sometimes I need to pull a 11mm rigging rope up and over so I can pull hard enough to get them down.
