Climbing a rope is fast, sure. Setting that rope from the ground can be the absolute opposite.

I see...I misunderstood the sequence, from I was seeing. I have to say, I do agree with Stephen, Kyle, Rajan, and Mick. It was not as smooth as I would have tried for, myself. But you got it where you wanted, and nothing got busted, so that's a win in anyone's books :).

These parts of your post seem to not be possible at the same time, @davidwyby. If it would break the hinge to winch it to over center leading to failure to hit the intended lay, then it's not possible that the first pull to over center, then the slack before the second pull, didn't result in...

Indeed. And even a fall from what might normally be a sub-fatal height, on to a fence like that could spell the be-all end. It's a very low probability event...just something the self-preservation part of our brains might dwell on.

Oh yessir, it is all those things. The scary part comes from the unwanted mental picture of falling from my perch above onto such a structure. It has happened before, at least once that I'm aware of.

@Bodean, you'd actually put the biner in the ring itself, and run the rope in it. It would be a sort of odd way to take the whole "ring for the rope" idea out of the product...but you'd only do this for negative rigging on a standing stem when the pinch issue you described might be in play...
