Well, after years of talking about it mybuddy Joe and I went up to climb the state champ white pine. Snow was to deep to get all the way there so we cross countried on foot till we found it. It has a huge dead top so theres no way to get all the way up. We set a tie in on the first green limb about 120 feet up. My 200' climb line was short so we tied a second one on. We wen't geared for this tree as advancing a line would be difficult and I had to get home by 2 to babysit so we just climbed to the tie in and came down. Joe tried the new tribe SRT for a bit, then came down and tried the sherrill tree frog system that I used. No spectacular feat but we will go back with another experienced climber or 2 and at least get into the canopy

Cool! It didn't look like that big of a deal until that last shot. Huge pine tree! Practicing for next month, huh?
:D

Wow, I've never seen a pine anywhere that big. It doesn't look like much in the way of decent limbs to get a line over....?

Neat how they misspelled the name not once, but twice!!
It is not Pinus monicola or Pinus Moticola, but Pinus Monticola.
I figured I'd better mention this before MB cracked down on it, hard as he is on spelling errors:D

great tree, really.
I'd love to climb it.

Ox, follow the 821 road on your map till it runs into hwy 140 and you will be real close. Much closer to Willow lake than Crater Lake

Good thing that fence is there to keep people from getting too close

Stig, I saw that too, but not knowing the proper name, I didn't know which one was right. Awesome tree.

That tree is huge.

I'll have to say, SRT looks way to energy consuming after using a Wraptor. I've actually never set up an SRT for entry into a tree for work believe it or not. This morning I actually took my static line out of the truck since it's just taking up room, just left the ascender and Pantin in there. :|:

It defonatly takes some getting used to, i'm still not 100% comfortable. The sherrill tree frog really seems efficient Brendan, obviously not like the wraptor but way more than Ddrt

What a beautiful monster! Like the Red Cedar, the Western White Pine's counterpart here in the east is quite a bit smaller. Here are some old growth Eastern White Pines in the Adirondacks of New York. They don't get a lot bigger than this before they're befelled by wind or lightning.
