Wollemia (Latin Wollémia) is a genus of coniferous trees of the Araucariaceae family, including a single species - noble wollemia (Latin Wollémia nóbilis). It was discovered in nature in 1994 in Australia, in the Wollemi National Park. Wollemia is one of the oldest plants on Earth, it was widespread in the Jurassic period ( 65 million years ago ) and was considered extinct millions of years ago, until park employee David Noble accidentally discovered about a hundred trees. This species was named after him (the word nobilis also means "noble").
The trees were discovered by David Noble, an employee of the National Parks and Reserves Administration of New South Wales, during a tour in the Wollemi National Park in a canyon more than 500 meters deep.
First, a small group of 40 trees was discovered — 23 adult trees, 16 young trees and one fallen (40 meters long and 3 meters in diameter of the trunk). The trees grew on an area of 5 thousand square meters. A second group of 17 trees was found about a kilometer up the canyon, and three more mature trees in a nearby canyon at an altitude of 40 meters in a gorge 150 meters deep.
The wood has clear annual rings, which makes it possible to make an approximate estimate of the age of individual trunks. So estimates of the age of the fallen forty-meter trunk are within 400 years. Measurements of annual rings have shown that the average annual growth is approximately 2 mm, but may vary depending on access to the resources necessary for growth.
