Yup. Duty is a major Government revenue source. It varies 0% for food, books, 10% for some things (can't remember), and 22.5% on everything else. Cars are 55%, Boats are 30%.
We might not pay income tax but they get it out of you one way or another...

We pay close to 50% income tax and a 25% import/sales tax on everything.

Bermuda doesn't have a welfare system...you outta work, you SOL...there is a limited financial assistance program for rent and helping with bills, but it is means tested and limited.
There is no dole.

Not really.
Welfare is set so you can live on it, barely.
Most people want to do better than that.
Also being raised commies, we tend to not abuse the system and to look ascance at those who do.
If you get caught collecting welfare and working at the same time, you really get ostrasized here.

That is a problem with our many moslem immigrants, they have no such mental restrictions against abusing the system.
In fact they seem to think that doimg so is a real cool thing.

Socialism only works if nobody or only a small minority abuses the system.

And before ya'll flame me, please note that I never said I was in favour of that kind of system.

Stig - I find it interesting how it seems to work out for youse over there.
I view Socialism as a tool for controlling the thinking and spending of it's citizens, who are effective robots. Cogs in the wheel of the State Apparatus! (Just kidding). Hope Luke isn't running TreeStuff like that!

I own a company ( or rather, half of one!) and mistreat my employees like a good capitalist

Bermuda has no dole and only limited financial assistance for housing and bills, no socialized medicine.
So if you outta work you SOL...but plenty of jobs, until the financial crisis hit...real hard on the unskilled workforce.
