Hey all. I'm looking into making a website, and I am wondering about any experiences you all have as far as best avenues to take. Most of the web hosts I've found online that have templates look pretty crummy, and I like the idea of doing a lot of the design myself (I'm the only non-artist of seven kids :/:).

Do you all have any recommendations, particular sites, or places where I could get a domain name, etc... I really don't know that first thing about where to go to do any of these things, so any help is a lot in my mind.

Thanks,

Andrew

one hint, dont let your friend(s) develope or host your site, its WAY hard to give them shit when they dont respond to emails, dont update your site regularly etc based on the 'you're getting a good deal cuz we are friends' deal.

Otherwise, I did my own basic stuff with Frontpage and Dreamweaver. I pay about $20 a year for my domain name via Uniserve, a locally based provider.

I want to completely redo my websites (I have 2) but I havent had the time, the money or the response from my 'friend' that did the last updates and hosts my data. Since I cant seem to get FTP to co-operate from my computer so currently my hands are kinda tied.

If you want someone to do it for you look at Costco.

It would be cool if these sites could show examples of what others have done, so I could get a better idea. ...For being 23 and a college grad, I sure am Internet dumb.

If you have a Mac, there's iWeb. This thing is a great program, and whether you use the MobileMe address you get when you buy MobileMe, or a domain name, iWeb is a great tool to design and maintain websites. Easy to operate, updates, or redesigns are quick and easy. Just can't say enough for this product!! And here's an example of it's work, my site I designed and maintain using iWeb. In the near future here, I plan on totally redesigning the site, so check back later!

Wagnaw, I use Yahoo! as my web host; costs me about $150 a year. The site iteslf I wrote in MS Word, and uploaded using the Yahoo! tool.

Not hard at all.

Website content is a tricky thing. Too much and people lose interest. A good design is important. These days, blogs are the going thing. You can link to a blog from your website if you want. Anyone can set up a blog, in about five or ten minutes. Plenty blog hosts available for free.

I doubt my customer base uses blogs very often. I find my major clientelle range couples 28 to 50 years old, a few single folk in the same age range and a handfull older yet. When I had a tracker o nmy sites I was getting from 15 to 75 hits a month, usually spurred on when I suggested to a prospective install or design client that they could see some past projects pictures there, more modern than carrying a printed portfolio.
I have VERY few pruning clients that have taken the time to look at the maintenance pics I have there.

I'm in the process of doing mine over. I've had some say that they HATE black backgrounds, so I thought I'd try something a bit lighter and more current. I bought a template to help me with the pop-out menus for a neater look....but am going to have to tweak it big time anyway.

If you're going to make a couple pages you can surely do it yourself if you have ANY computer skills and lots of patience/time.

If you're going to be changing the content EVER, I can't imagine having to go through someone else for what would otherwise take you ten minutes on dial-up or maybe ONE on high speed.

I've been using Frontpage.....WYSISYG (or however you write that).....but there are certain parts of it that are not being supported anymore. If you go to www.download.com there are many programs you can try for free before buying. Check out their prices first though....Dreamweaver is supposed to be so good, but I've never been able to justify the expense and the time it would take to learn it.

I think I pay about $65 a year....http://icdsoft.com/hosting.php

I've never had any problem with them except that they don't really speak "website for dummies" which is MY level.

This is my original site....but it's not really a good site for selling. My new site will have 'buy it' buttons and such. It will also be easier to navigate as this one is kinda chaotic.
