All the folks I've heard of getting f'd by falling out of the bucket with no harness, this vid shows exactly how it happens

So, I'm not happy someone had a serious mishap but given the music here, wasn't sure whether to post here or the Funny vid thread...

That looked like he got whallopped on the head. No evidence of consciousness after that.
A slightly wider view here. Looks like he got hit on the head at the same moment the rest of the top hit the upper boom. Wearing a harness but no hardhat, damn. Nice looking bucket truck.

Physics at play there:

F= ma

That large a mass, even at a slow acceleration delivered a massive force to his unprotected skull. Wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t survive. At the least he’d likely have suffered spinal compression injuries, possible meningeal tearing, and if his skull was fractured the sudden intense intracranial pressure might well have resulted in an instantaneous uncal herniation*, and no one survives that without life-altering consequences, if they survive it at all.

Then again since the bucket was free to move he was perhaps not taking the full force as he would have if he was on a static platform (on the ground), which alleviates some of the worst of these described downsides…

*(Uncal herniation occurs when the pressure in the skull forces the brain matter down into the brainstem.The brainstem is a vital part of the brain, responsible for controlling essential bodily functions like breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and the sleep-wake cycle. Prognosis is poor for even a short period of herniation).

@pigwot good info. As I read your post was wondering what the uncal stuff was (didn't see your apostrophe) and sure enough you went on to explain it.

Yeah that was a hella wreck. Not wearing a hard hat is no bueno but certain things make me think he had some skills- nice bucket truck and wheeled loader on site indicate good equipment/not fly by nite. And the harness indicates a level of awareness. The way he feathered the saw throttle near the end indicates to me a level of familiarity and experience with tree cutting. Perhaps there was some hidden rot in the far side.
