.. pretty much my biggest fear ... a tree failed wholesale in Atlanta a few years ago ... KILLING the poor ass arborist putting in a BID for removal ....

My biggest fear also.. Live oaks and gray pines cut loose at the base often.. I just prefer it not be when I am in the tree. Sad. Wonder if the owner sounded the trunk and check the roots prior to the climb...
The bit about OSHA and the safety harness kinda seems stoopid..

A sad story for sure. Sounds like the owner of the tree service is a bit of a dope though. And of course the news story can't keep their facts straight through all of the hype.

A crew from OSHA arrived to begin an investigation because Stetson's safety harness for some reason could not save him. Allen says the worst part of this for him is the fact that he had just re-hired Stetson on Saturday because he said he needed the work.

Force field saddles on the market yet?

There's your invention Willie. The owner came off like a bit of a dope but I guess we can give him the benefit of the doubt. Sucks huge for this guy and his loved ones. I will be a little more careful now.

Shoot Steve how can you be careful with that other than not take questionable trees, even then it said the tree had no outward signs of decay...Man Ive got a big oak next week that has "moved". On the backside of it there is a brick patio that has ridges in it from where the roots have pulled it up......:|:

It seems a little paradoxical, how often is a tree so weak that it will snap off, and not show any signs of decay?

Sad, to say the least.

Any tree I've ever climbed that was like that told me it was like that as I ascended. It became 'wobbly' and I descended immediately.

still , total failure at or below grade may not be felt until the moment it occurs ... health of the root system as well as soil conditions below grade are kind of an educated guess whereas a visible weak spot that shouldn't be climbed above , or say an active bees nest will be noticed by the experienced climber...

Does 'just hired him back on this last weekend' sound like, 'he's been working under the table?'

Yeah Paul, I should have been more specific. The only thing you can do is check the tree out more throughly before you go up it. Need to have Paul thump on it with his mallet.
