Plenty of squirrels, a few flying ones... raised an evicted baby squirrel last summer. Probably some birds too... and some brown bats. I don't like it.

I had a rat jump out of a coconut palm I was trimming and land on my chest. When that happens, the rat always ran down my body and to the trunk of the tree. This one ran up and over my face. It couldn't get past the lid of my hardhat and scratched up my face trying to. I had scratch marks INSIDE my lower lip. I had to grab it and throw it down.

Funny thing is I did not freak out. I go into a different mind set when I'm in the tree. I hate those big roaches we have here and need to use something to swat them when I'm on the ground. In the tree, I'll slam them with my bare hand.

I'm a meaner so and so than some of you guys. I cut down a huge clump of junipers at a mortuary a few years ago. A tramp was living in them and scareing people.

besides your average bird, squirrel, or raccoon. The most memorable was a baby owl. After the tree hit the ground I picked it up on my finger, posed for a photo then put it in the woods. I saw momma flying 50 ft away and knew it would be ok. Those things have needle sharp claws.:O

I flopped a fir recently with a litter of baby squirrels in the top. It really bothered me. One was injured and the others seemed ok. I set them away from the work area where I heard mommy calling for them and a few hours later they were gone.
We laid out the spar with the center lead still attached on a 70 foot silver maple some time ago and as that tree fell i watched a squirrel dive out of it at about 50 feet. he did gymnastics through the air, landed on a brsh pile, and ran away. It was cool to see him unharmed.
Years ago my boss felled a hollow shagbark hickory. As I was dicing it into firewood length, I got 3 sudden bursts of red mist off the sprocket of the bar. Turns out there were squirrels in the tree and while i was cutting it up, they were running through the inside of the tree to escape at the far end and kept running into my chain. Pretty gory.

My worst was just last year. An easy palm tree trim, didn't even need to spike it because the ladder reached the head. Lanyarded in, fired the saw and on the very first cut the screams started. I cut straight through a hidden nest and cut a baby skwerl in half and he was still alive, screaming his head off. It was a lakefront lot so I took him down and threw him into the lake.

Damn, I hate when that happens. :(

Wow! I had a rat jump on me once. Landed on my chest then ran up on my shoulder and bailed out. Nearly landed on my groundman, who freaked out more than I did. I was really glad he didn't run up under my face shield. :O
I'm also glad he bailed before I had time to react, might have cut my own arm off trying to get rid of him. :|:

Monkey and I worked a maple a couple years ago where I flopped a starling filled log out of the tree. He later removed a section with a hawk nest and babies. Later we took it back up the tree and strapped it near where it came from. Folks that lived there said they removed the nest a few weeks later after the birds were flying
