tip die back deodora cedar

ive seen a lot of trees in urban and rural landscapes with tip die back lately
2 of my sites have it on their trees
tips die back, loose some needles, weep a little sap (where needles were)
no cankers or insects visible
no root disturbance or irrigation issues
we have a lot of fungus, blight and other issues this year along the north coast
any ideas?

nope, scattered around the edges from bottom to top, less in the lower 1/3rd

compaction wasnt an issue in the yard one in open grass the other in a planter

Lawn...Too much water?

Compaction can still be a real problem in lawns/planters...foot traffic, mowers and lack of organic matter combined with wet soil isn't a good combo.

I'm thinking solar exposure, perhaps...we see it here after a spate of hot weather. Especially bad on trees planted along the north side of an asphalt road running east-west.

You ever get any shoot tip moths?

I've seen it on spruce here mainly. But seems like one other species too, and I don't remember which.

There would be a tiny tunnel bored down the stem. Usually just gets the top foot or two.
