I've fallen into the troubleshoot shotgun attack maze myself, many a time 
. But in my more advanced age and perhaps wisdom, I've found solace in the systems approach, as y'all are advising. You know them... air, fuel, spark, compression.
First, I try to settle on which is most likely to be the issue, given the symptoms. After that analysis, I try to eliminate all readily addressable possibilities before going on to the next most likely system.
