Butch wasn't a fan of people using the reply function in threads... I'm sure he had his reasons, but in general, IMO, I think it's better to use them than to not. On other forums, it's customary to use the reply function even if it's just the last post in the thread.

Aside from making it easier to track the conversation, it also gives a notification to the person you're replying to. On higher traffic forums, not having that notification makes it easy to miss things. I assume those notifications would make it easier to carry on a conversation, which would increase traffic here, which is something people have voiced being interested in.

Ok I’ll use the quote function more.

"There is no need to quote the previous post." MB
He was big on that, but it seems easy and sensible.

I just reply to the individual. Is there something wrong with that?

No, but it’s easier to follow the conversation if others can see what you’re referencing.

None of it is a declaration, just an observation. @cory responded to one of my posts today, I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t see it. If that happens to me, it’s bound to happen to others, collectively lowering the rate of conversation.

It was a considerable bone of contention.

He was inexplicably dogmatic about it.
I thought it was a computing power thingy, technically speaking.

I agree that especially for strangers, quoting makes it easier. An outsider to a bunch of friends with inside jokes and slang and relationships will have a hard time getting into the group because it's hard to follow the culture.
