Kinda old news, though.
Superconductivity has been known for about a century, I believe.

Yup, we studied that in physics classes... it does seem like about a century ago.

They've got some actual super conductor stuff that will carry 3000 amps which are about the size of a pencil .Exotic stuff so costly only the gov can afford it .

The technology has been theoretical for some time but it is coming to fruit. For what applications it is only a guess. Military more than likely. A shame

Yes and no .There has been talk of using a similar thing for high speed rail service .Fact if I'm not mistaken it might have already been used in a test situation .

Theoretically it's a matter of using magnets of opposing forces to kind of "float " the passenger cars while at the same time being able to alternately switch polarities between the car and what acts as the rail to provide motive power .Now how that's actually done I have not a clue .

You might be able to google how it's actually done but an article of same was in Popular Mechanics or Popular Science a few years back .

The "Linear Motor Car" is in advanced stages of testing now. Linear force is proportional to the magnetic current which holds the train above the rails, or something like that. Tremendous costs to build the system and man does it eat electricity.

At the test track at 500k/h:
