Hey Butch, I like your port-a-wrap attachment pics. I have three questions for you if you have the time:

(1) Do you always use this type attachment, or do you modify for really heavy pieces?

(2) Could you post some pics of your porty (unless it's patented)? I like the way it looks, and would like to build one.

(3) What type rope is that (brand, size, tensile strength)? It favors 3/4" Arborplex methinks??

1) No, it'll take as much as I'll ever wanna give it.
2) Sure, I just copied the style of the original - no biggie. Modify it as you see fit.
3) The rope? It doesn't matter as long as it's the same size as your rigging rope.

This is the old style

I like this style better.

Not to be a smartass, but your rigging rope should always be the weak link in the set-up.

If you tie off your line to a nearby tree stump, put the other end on the GRCS and crank until something fails, which would you expect to fail in most cases, the block, the GRCS, the rope or the rigging spar? I know if you are rigging off the trunk of some big tree its not going to fail but if you have some nice high spar to rig your brush off of, its going to be the spar.

I think the whole "weak link law" as Don Blair describes it says the rope is supposed to be the weakest link so that in case something breaks neither the block nor the porty will be released, which might kill the climber. In reality this is impossible to achieve since the breaking strength of the tree is unknown. It is still something to consider when building a rigging system though. At the very least it helps to be aware of the strength of each component in the system.
