There are a lot of wide open spaces out West that no one but the Government would want. We the people own the west.

I'm surprised Maine has such a small percentage. I figured that place is so cold, the gov't MUST own most of it. ...who else would?

....granted, I've never been there. :|:

Most of Maine is owned by varying logging outfits.

I lol'ed at Nevada and Alaska.

So when a lot of land is federally owned.
Isn't that a little like COMMUNISM:O:O:O:O

Well I sure would not want to see something like Yosemite after the masses decided they would build there if the Gov did not have a say so

You think Yosemite valley has not been turned into essentially a tourist toilet now?

An absolute joke in the summer. To think that 3 miles from the valley floor we would be in a "wilderness" area and no chainsaws were allowed for use in putting out a fire, yet goddamn pink buses, full of fat city asses, were in the valley in the thousands.

Last time I visited the valley floor I was shocked. Masses of people running around, jumping fences, eating junk food supplied by the park vendors, even mylar balloons floating around. Garbage littering all over the place.

The vendors reminded me of TSA type employees. Semi-retarded 'dont-give-a-shit', 'not-my-job' types.
Actually pretty much out of control.

I don't know why they have turned the valley floor into a fast food chain/disney type attraction.

I was in Zion not long ago and had the same experience. Fortunately, there's still good back country around... which I'm sure they'll get to paving as soon as budget permits. We have to make it so any sorry-ass, out of shape slob can enjoy the pristine solitude.

Actually, what I like about the parks I have been to, which is most of the western ones, is the fact that they manage to pretty much keep
the " sorry-ass, out of shape slobs" corralled.
The parks are set up in a way so you have an easy access route, travelled by all of those, who don't really want to get out of their cars. And a lot of pristine ( to an european, anyway) backcountry.
Take Denali NP, they bus the slobs in, but walk a mile away from the busroad and there is no sign of them.
The thing is, the poor slobs don't want the backcountry experience, they want to take pictures of wildlife from their car windows. I don't think there is any danger of them invading the pristine solitude.

Personally I think the whole national park system is one of the things that makes America worth visiting ( aside from the friendly natives and pretty california girls:D)
Teddy Roosevelt did a great thing, when he saved all that land from miners and oil drillers and those damned loggers, who want to kill every tree, they see;).
