Shou sugi ban, if done right, is supposed to provide protection from insects and the elements. Not usually done right.

Well, supposedly there are standing wooden buildings in japan treated with the technique that are over 400 years old. Personally, I just like the aesthetic, and the fact I don’t have to fool around with paint or finishing.

Charring and or kiln drying yes

I have found burnt logs cut by axe. Mountain is full of ancient burnt logs.


Aspen dies of disease or whatever, rotten in a year.

Kiln dried by fire, lasts for years.
