Here in North Dakota our deer licenses are issued by a lottery drawing. Applicants must submit their applications, along with 20 dollars, by the 6th of June. The drawing takes place in September, I believe. Deer season opens in early November and ends by Thanksgiving. Each applicant is allowed to apply for only ONE deer license. Additional licenses are issued in areas where there are more deer licenses than applicants.
This year, due to our previous extreme winters, deer hunting permits will be reduced to near record low numbers. The chance of being drawn for a deer license is extremely low in northeastern North Dakota, where winter kill took a terrible toll on our deer population. The State Game and Fish Department says it may be three years before the deer license numbers begin to increase significantly......provided we don't have any further decline in population due to extreme winter kills between now and then.
I'll be sending in my application for the deer gun season sometime next week.......but I don't expect to be issued a license. Chances are good that I'll get a refund.
