Don't beat yourself up over it. It may not have been such a great deal. Limited description, third party seller, no details about maintenance, hours, etc. It's probably a POS.

Looks suspicious. Based on the assumption that people are inherently dishonest, I would guess that it's stolen unless shown evidence to the contrary.

A bill of sale would do it . Possesion is pretty much ownership unless it has been reported stolen and someone else can otherwise prove ownership by some form of documentation .

I'm sure the laws differ from state to state on this .

Bill of sale. May not be the best but it will work.

Like FJR said, here in Illinois chippers don't need a title, for insurance purposes chippers are mobile equipment, same for stump grinders no title or plate is required for them as they are not considered trailors because they can't carry any cargo over the road.

Knowing Illinois and it's current budget crisis some bureaucrat will find a way to get a few more bucks out of us and change the classification. Give it time.

Is the bill of sale an official document, issued by the state? Or is it just a piece of paper that anyone can print up?

One thing about the gov and operating budgets is the fact they never really run out of money as much as they whine about it . The powers to be just pass new edicts to suck more money out of the general populous .

Hang em high, hangem all except 6 for pallbearers . :X

Just a recept that says you bought something .It could be nothing more than a handwritten thing on a piece of paper .If in doubt though get it notarized .A couple of bucks well spent in states that have notaries .

Think it through. Do you have a title for that toaster and the deck chairs you bought at Costco? Government issued Bill of Sale? How about a simple sales reciept for your refrigerator? It is not for naught that the expression "Possession is 9/10ths of the law." came into being. We are presumed to own the things which we possess unless there is a dispute. Then evidence must be weighed. That is as it should be. The difference betwixt owning a bag of potato chips and a chipper is only scale (along with usefulness and durability).

Oh Lawdy I was at a convention once and during a lull in the progran visited the hotel lounge for a cool one .The subject arose in a conversation about having titles for back hoes, dozers etc .

I of course was anti on the subject .One proponent in the disccussion was certainly all for .As it turned out he was a lawyer, that figures .

CT rapes us for everything. Sales tax, property tax, registration blah blah. I just registered my dump trailer in MAINE for $90 for 5 yrs. Nothing illegal about it, and cheap as shit. He told me they have 700,000 trailers through there company, under 100k are in from MAINE. If you noticed, alot of big rig companys have all their trailers registered there, so I jumped on the wagon.

Yep,
When I ran a trucking company we registered all our trailers in Maine and all our trucks in Florida.

I think in CA you can get a title for an extra $25. At least that's how it was with my dump trailer.

My double axle trailer weighs around 2700 pounds and cost around 40 bucks per year for tags . No title needed just a weight slip .

Things like chippers, compressers ,welders and the like do not require tags .

In addition any thing used for farming such as bottom dump grain wagons require no tag but must display a slow moving sign no matter what it's being towed by .

It varies state to state . In Pa. for example tags were required at one time for a farm tractor if driven on the road .I don't know if it's still that way or not .

The Nelson line-clearance trucks working around here are registered in Ohio, and have plats on the chipper that says "No tags needed on chipper in Ohio:P" Well, they don't have the razz, but you know they're thinking it.
