Following are some pics of Terri and I at Hendy Grove. Taken on 1-3 and 1-4 of 09.

These are the largest trees you'll find in this grove of 820 acres. Notably smaller than you would find in the groves farther north. Hendy woods is located in a bit drier and warmer inland clime and the last fire that went through there, about a hundred years ago, really burned a lot of the trees bad. The fire damage is very apparent all through the grove.

You might find the Father of the Redwoods an interesting tree. It's kind of a local legend.

The Four Corners Tree is the largest DBH in the Grove. But the first one of Terri and I posing by probably has the largest volume of any tree there.

With all do respect to Bodean and the hard work he and his boys put in when building the art object at the presidio, but nothing compares with nature's creativity.

Hmm,well with that in mind ,anatomically speaking, the last pic must be the momma .:|:

I should have seen that one coming.

That last pic is called a "goose pen." The old timers used trees and stumps like it to keep barn yard animals contained. Why they didn't come to be called chicken pens or pig pens beats me, but through the years "goose pen" most certainly stuck.

I always thought that they were called that because they resembled a quill pen, and also the term "quilled out". Learn something new everyday.

I wish we had trees like that on the right coast.

Spectacular... but I've come to expect that from you.
