I have got a 40 wood extension ladder and I kind of like the bounce. Of course I like rough air flying too.

It is easy to have a brain fart with a ladder around wires and it only takes one to be your last. Working on rough uneven ground would make that easier to happen. I don't know what your average house is like but often you can access the roof on a lower level and work your way up.

Ladders come in different weights. A medium weight fibreglass is quite a bit lighter that heavy weight. I think heavy is 300 lb. cap. , med. 240.
You probably aren't going to be carrying many 80 lb. bundles up on the roof, are you? Medium would probably be heavy enough.

Around here it is pretty easy to off a ladder you don't need anymore. I would say buy a medium 20 foot fibreglass and trade up if you want later.

I have 2 24' werner fiberglass ladders here and I'd rather footlock 20 ft a hundred times than drag one of those things around. When that weight gets extended they're a total pain to manage. Great around the house though.

They do have those stow-able collapsing ones now. Some are pretty nice. Only 15.5' but takes up hardly any space.

I am surprised by how heavy a lot of the ladders are. a 24' ladder can be 50-60 pounds!

Carbon fiber?!?!?!

My big ladder is I think 80 or 90lbs, it sits on the ladder rack most of the time. If I have a lot of trees I just separate the two halves much lighter and easier to handle.

I used my neighbor's fiberglass ladder ONCE...probably 24-30 feet. Totally too heavy, hard to manage. I'd go with aluminum, not fiberglass.

I think the tendency any more is for fiberglass ladders for industrial usage .OSHA has became such shitheads with wooden ladders they aren't even used any more .

About 5 6 years ago I came home with a pick up truck full of good ladders ,all wooden from a contractors liquidation auction .I bought them half a dozen at a time for usually under ten bucks .One was a 24 foot wooden extension ladder ,two bucks .I also bought three 600 foot reels of 1" three strand nylon I had under 200 bucks in .Right place ,right time .
