They are big in the news past couple weeks. Unexplained heavy night time drone activity in Jersey area and elsewhere in USA.

I didn't pay much attention early on, but the issue seems persistent. Why can't or isn't the fed 'authorities' giving any explanations or solutions?

Could it be aliens and gubmint doesn't want to cause panic. Yes, I said the A word.

Your thoughts, pls.

As we know, drones can be extremely effective, lethal weapons and do major surveillance so it seems the issue should be taken very seriously

Considering the flight paths, the areas they're being reported in, and the fact that they have navigation lights on, my suspicion is that we're seeing drone warfare training.

I assure you, America has the best radar and surveillance systems on the planet. The government knows exactly what's going on, that's why we're not hearing anything from them.

Why would an airport announce it is suddenly shut down for several hours if it is due to drone training

Because pilots are even worse divas than tree climbers.

Also, it's likely to be fully involved, so far as training goes. Airports are viable targets, every one needs to work out procedures.

If it is bad actors from some communist utopia, then there's likely to be air strikes and such.

Also, to be fair, until something nefarious does occur, theres been no reason to panic.

Seems the drones may be sniffing for missing nuclear materials. Wouldn’t do for the gubmint to be honest and tell folks the truth…

Could just be a media distraction causing hype. The gov may have something they want distracted from, so the news has to make a big deal out of some nonsense.

Drones are such a popular "toy" that I'm really not surprised if there are many sightings, and they are much more likely to be seen at night. I've seen one at night over a lake, and one during the day fly near my backyard. I quickly grabbed my goggles and tried to tune into it's video channel, but couldn't (out of range, powered down, or an incompatible channel).

It could even be some play to get the FAA to consider more restrictions. Drones do give civilians a lot of power. You could consider them related to the 2nd amendment by helping civilians compete with military tech. It's bad enough that the FAA lumped model airplanes and helicopters in with their relatively highly restrictive laws on drones, as far as recreational use goes.

I was sorely tempted to shotgun a real estate agent's drone a few months back. He didn't need to overfly my property repeatedly to take pictures of the place across the road.

Out of curiosity, I looked up what the laws were regarding doing as he was doing, and for my considered response.

Long story short, he can fly over my property until I request that he desist, then he cannot. And if I shoot his drone down, it is treated by federal law just exactly the same as if I shot down any other aircraft...in other words, a felony with a very long prison term in the offing.

I struggle and fail completely to recall a time in my life when Washington (i.e. the federal government) did not have a credibility problem. My history studies fail to find ANY time since the very beginnings when that was different. For that matter, any level of gov't...state, county, municipal. All have generally failed to keep the trust of their citizens. Not hard to understand why, either.

Of course, no other system of gov't in any country on earth can argue that they are not saddled with the same issue.

Some people who wish to represent the rest of us are good folks with good intentions, I am sure. But far too many are narcissists with personal agendas.

I will risk speculation; from what I have read of his posted opinions, perhaps Scott may think that means we'd be better off with no government. I may well be completely wrong in that.

In any case, I do not share that point of view. But I reckon we do have to be vigilant as citizens and do our best to watch what the government is doing and what it is telling us. Fake news and conspiracy theories are just as manipulative as any gov't ever tried to be, and in these days of online media, just as powerful at successfully selling their propaganda.

I agree but perhaps it is worse now than is typical.

I agree; most start off with good intentions but over time, almost invariably, proper, wise leadership goes south.

You are indeed completely wrong in that.

We need “government”. Now…we must define exactly what it is that we “need”. I daresay the vast majority of “government” does absolutely nothing for the people.
