So which is the "highest" credential? Is certified arborist the top qualification, or only the beginning?

Really, it is your foundation. There is a tree worker certification that is very basic, at the other end is Board Certification. Start here

Did you do paper or computer testing, Willie? I have no idea where I'd have to go to take the tests, should I decide to pursue it. I considered it a couple of years ago, but most of my work is removal, and most of my customers are penny-pinchers to start with. I don't know that it would benefit my profits much, though learning never hurt anyone (generally speaking).

I've done both. The computer based is generally able to be done in any decent sized towns where the written is only in places where there is a proctor to oversee the exam. Cost more for the test as you have to pay the testing facility but save money on a hotel and traveling ime

I know they say that if you are working in the proximity of high voltage lines to "secure the services of a qualified line clearance specialist" or something like that. Does anyone do that? I just do what I have to do. I cut my tree teeth working overhang off 3-phase lines, and from what I've heard lately, the local line trimmers don't have anyone who can climb worth anything anymore. I work off overhang on take-downs a couple of times a year at least.

Around here we have one city with their own power, everyone else has pacific power, the only outfit "allowed" to work overhang or within 10' is trees inc, on the worst stuff we will put in a work order and wait for them to get clearance, otherwise we go for it. The town with it's own power will clear service lines for us even! In a reasonable amount of time even

From ISA it would be Board Certified Master Arborist or BCMA...

There is of course Consulting Arborist but that's a different animal.

Certified line clearance arborist, CLCA, is different... that is something an employer can do

Reading this thread has made me decide to take my South Dakota arborist test. I am filling out the app tomarrow. I was thinking people around here might think more of a state cert than of the ISA that they never heard of. The SDAA test is pretty much the same as the ISA test from what I hear. I plan on taking the ISA test as well.

Me and one of my guys took the EHAP course in Omaha that the TCIA put on. We just have to get CPR certified and then we will get cert.

Put it this way, being an Certified Arborist wont hurt your business. If anything it will just broaden your knowledge and open more doors for you, whether your a business owner or not.

Even though I'm a CA and have been for years now, I have mixed feelings about all these certs That ISA and TCIA are pushing, but having my CA has defiantly mad e the difference in the type clientel and $$....
