Good to hear some updates on this case Steve.
I've been hanging on the edge of my space bar.

I had to wait for the guy to return from vacation in Illinois. You must have a better keyboard than I do.:)

TA-DAAA Here's the email I got from the Merced Cooperative Extension guy:
Stephen,
I met with the insect expert at the Ag commisioners office (Bob Aguiler)
and we identified the insects found in the tree. Is was the larvae of the
carpenter moth. There is not much we can do for control. They suggested
that systemic insecticides will kill the moth as it emerges from the tree
and maybe the eggs as they are laid. This treatment would have to be
repeated over time and there is no guarantee of success.

The lifecycle of the moth is about three years. This means that the larvae
lives in the tree for three years before it emerges as a moth. During that
time it causes a lot of damage, with the ability to bore into the center of
the tree - which is what we observed.

My guess is that the tree will survive for a few more years but probably
will become a hazard after those years.

is that the same as the carpenterworm Prionoxystus robiniae? It has a lifecycle in the east of 22 months in the tree and 2 months out. I've seen the moth; plain brown bug nothin special. but the larvae can turn trees into swiss cheese. climb and rig with care.

govt workers are generally hack consultants--they Always say "it'll be a hazard in a couple years" just to CTA. :withstupid:

There is always a physical control method of digging out and treating each hole...:|:
