I don't have a clue about this. Anyone know of instructions like 'bit torrent for dummies'?
I looked at the official instructions from the bit torrent web site, but they seem to assume a knowledge of computer programing and terminology.

Is it a good program for downloading music and movies?

thanxs in advance

Frans, you need a bit torrent program, you run the program in the background then go to bit torrent sites on the web, search the video or mp3 that you are looking for. When you find it you click on it and the bit torrent software should download it. There is a listing on the bit torrent site where you can sort the columns of S and L (seeds, people who have the whole program) and L (leachers, people who have part of the program), the more seeds, the better download speed.

Dont overthink it, its really simple and perhaps too much so.

I use mininova.org and isohunt.com for the files and http://www.bittorrent.com/ as the client.

here's an IE : http://www.mininova.org/tor/2435592 the code from the filename is "The Notebook KLAXXON DVDRIP" which means the movie is the notebook and its a DVD rip (as opposed to someone sitting in a theater with a handycam) and the ripper is KLAXXON, another user that I prefer is AXXO, if you download a bunch of stuff you will find that certain rippers seem to save their files in certain formats like AVI or WMV and one style will work better on your computer.

does that help at all? If not, talk to any teenager that is in to computers and get them to show you the ropes. :D

Um.... this could take a while.

Long and short, I prefer LimeWire over Bittorrent (although LimeWire does support torrent downloading.) I think you'll find it's easier to use and understand.

Netree, I think the difference is that bit torrent downloads a little piece from each seed and/or leacher simultaneously where I think Limewire was one to one filesharing? I havent used limewire in ages so I could be wrong. With bit torrent if you get a decent amount of seeds, like 20 or more, the average movie (about 700megabytes) takes maybe 2 hours or less. I downloaded a movie a couple months ago and it took about 1/2 an hour. spiderman 3 was pretty popular that day.
I havent dug deep into the settings so I dont know if there is bandwidth throttling like limewire.

NeTree, I downloaded the Limewire software, but was unable to find old music tracks I was looking for. But I did spot some stuff on the bittorrent site. Steely Dan and the Beetles was what I was looking for.

I am still unclear about the morality of getting songs for free....... guess I have to work that out in my head.

So I downloaded bit torrent, then selected a song. Weird program which kept doing stuff for a long time, but I was never able to simply put the mp3 onto my desk top.

NeTree, your absolutely correct! This WILL take awhile :) Thanks for all your patience.

I think it is worth it, as folks have told me that you can watch clear, movies, not some jerky not so clear short clips.

The way I look at it, if I didn't download it for free, I wouldn't have bought it either. So both ways, I'm not supporting the artist/industry!

At least that's what lets me sleep at night.

hm, I downloaded Watchmen and the Wrestler last week, haven't got around to watching them yet.

I take solace in the production company taking payment for placed product advertising ;)

Frans, what songs are you looking for, I might be able to download them and email to you for review, then if you like them, you can go to Itunes and buy'em :shifty:

hang tight, I will figure one.
edit: ok, I just previewed it for a sec to make sure it was viable, it is sadly a theater recording but... a pretty good one. : 'Watchmen.[2009.Eng].CAM.DivX-LTT' found at isohunt.com

second edit: at isohunt.com, The Wrestler, DVD rip, good quality - 'The Wrestler[2008]DvDrip-MAX.avi'

utorrent is a nice program to download torrents with, it takes very little power from your puter and is easy to use :)

So I clicked on this Beetles album, and then the bit torrent program began this activity. Something about 'seeds' and I was supposed to wait until two separate numbers became equalized. did that, but then no beetles album.

I feel so stupid with all this

its takes a moment or three. The seeds are people with the full file, the leachers are people with a partial file. basically if the file is 700 MB it splits it in to 700 pieces and tries to down a piece from a seed or leacher,

for a visual, think of it as a waterfall of information drops (Bit torrent) vs a single drop trickle from a tap (think Napster), you get your bucket filled way quicker with one vs the other.

for me the one problem I had is finding the file, I use a second hard drive for my data but bit torrent shoved the files into the prebuilt Windows my documents folders, a place I dont look for my data.

Also I dont believe you can preview in bit torrent, you need to wait till its done.
ETA for Wolverine movie, 2 hours. :D

So here is a screen shot of the bit torrent window.

Question: how do I know when the file is done?
Should I pay attention to the download and upload ratios?

do you have a firewall or other software that block the program ??

rare or obscure stuff usually doesn't have many seeds or leechers, you have can just leave it open (the bit torrent client) and any time the program is running it will continue to search and download.
once it is fully downloaded you become a seed, unless you delete the torrent (not the actual data file but the 'cookie' type file). then its yours to move around your hard drive as you see fit.

Thanks. I'm gonna drop it for now and go and make a dump run.

I fully understand things like the dump

depends on your wants / needs / time to adapt. I DL'ed Wolverine in an hour 45 while chit chatting here. :)
