Apple scab or apple maggot. Is that one of those rubber "mulch" rings? I hate those

The trunk needs to be painted also. To protect from sunburn and then flathead borers will invade.

WHOA! Thanks for the article. It's way over my head, tho. I now have a new appreciation for that "clean" apple I buy at the store. We just bought one apple tree to try it out.

No, it's not a rubber trunk ring. I've never heard of those. Are they for real? I just throw all my chipper/shredder stuff around the base. It looks real nice for a day, until all the squirrels, raccoons, birds come mess it up. But then the mulch shrinks to nothing, and a bit of time goes by before I get to add more.
