67 years ago, on October 4, 1957, a new era began — the space age.

The satellite, which became the first artificial celestial body, was launched into orbit by the R-7 launch vehicle from the 5th scientific research range of the USSR Ministry of Defense, which later received the open name Baikonur Cosmodrome.

The PS-1 spacecraft (the simplest Sputnik-1) was a ball with a diameter of 58 centimeters, weighed 83.6 kg, and was equipped with four antennas for transmitting signals powered by transmitter batteries.

The PS-1 satellite flew for 92 days, until January 4, 1958, making 1,440 revolutions around the Earth (about 60 million km), and its radio transmitters worked for two weeks after launch.

It was a great victory for man, which became a turning point in the history of civilization.3.5 years will pass before the flight of the first man into space (April 12, 1961) Яндекс — поиск по видео - https://yandex.ru/video/touch/preview/17540493770653292490 Яндекс — поиск по видео - https://yandex.ru/video/touch/preview/3172164901627712608

The first expedition (1492-1493) of Christopher Columbus, consisting of 91 people on the ships "Santa Maria", "Pinta", "Niña" left Palos de la Frontera on August 3, 1492, turned West from the Canary Islands (September 9), crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the subtropical zone and reached The San Salvador Islands in the Bahamas Archipelago, where Christopher Columbus landed on October 12, 1492 (the official date of the discovery of America). Interestingly, the Lorraine cartographer M. Waldemuller attributed to Amerigo Vespucci the discovery of the "fourth part of the world" made by Columbus, and suggested naming this continent in his honor — America. For South America, this designation quickly found universal recognition, and in 1538, on Mercator's map, it was first extended to North America
