I'm going to drop it off at the saw shop. But in the mean time, let's have your first guess. Starts fine, idles fine, runs well. Once its up to temp after a few cuts, it idles high. Crank seals?

Change in rpm is not good and can result in expensive surgery is you run it longer than tests.

Broken fuel line, ugly pick up/fuel filter, bad membrane/gaskets is a couple more things to look at.

She is at the dealer. I just don't have the time to fool with it. I have a few other saws on the bench that are due for a part or two. Adding another isn't going to help matters. It worried me that it only gets the high idle when warm, like after metal has expanded.

I would pressure test it when warm. I am not normally on the "crank seal" band wagon but you may be correct. Where in PA are you?

Sounds typical of a crank seal .On the other hand I had a torn boot on one of the 038 Stihls that only showed itself after the saw was warm .My goodness but how that thing ran though ,scrarey RPMS and never lost R's in the cut .It took some investigation to find that one .

Seems like a possibility, but why the problem only when warm? Seems like harder starting would also be a result. I don't doubt that they exist, but I have worked on lots of saws, and still have yet to find a blocked fuel filter.

I'm not convinced the saw is fixed. I will be after a half a dozen cuts.

I replaced two fuel filters on our saws at work and they had been on there for at least two years (we only work in the summer here) and they didn't seem that dirty and the saws didn't run much better when they were new. I took the filters apart and there seems to be ceramic tube in there that filters the fuel. It had some dirt specs but it definitely didn't look to clogged. So then I tried to suck air through it and got a nice mouth of fuel...Just kidding. They seem along the same lines as chain sprockets...Never replaced one on a saw and have run many chains on it. Not sure when to replace those things....maybe when they decentigrate???

Well if you run a rim long enough it comes apart it will destroy about 6-10 drivers on the chain .They're only about 5 bucks to replace .

I highly doubt the saw is fixed. Sounds like the shop spent about 3 minutes on 'diagnostics' and threw a part at it just so they could say they did something. Another example of why I don't pay people to work on my saws.

I've always fixed my own saws. Rebuilds included. I don't have the focus these days. That's why I usually check for an opinion on here. I just don't have the desire to sit down and trouble shoot them.

I've had issues like you describe from clogged fuel filters before. They might be right. Fuel filters clog with water not debris, so even though they may look fine they can be clogged. Worked the westcoast of Vancouver Island for seven years water gets everywhere. Transfer fuel from a drum or holding tank to a fiver to a combi and then to your saw, you're getting some water somewhere along the way when it's pouring 24/7.

Typically I don't pay people to change filters for me, but I had guessed it was something bigger. I sprayed some ether behind the clutch just for kicks to check the crank seal on that side. No response. Perfect.

Us simple minded forget the simple stuff sometimes...

I would not be surprised this did the trick, but if so it had more to do with fuel supply than run time or temps.
Spraying will not do the trick if it is a temp related issue. Tilting from side to side mostly work.
Make sure it is set correct and lines are correct now after filter change.

Often when the 372 act up when hot it is air leaks in base or crankcase.
Then it run as it should cold, but get funny as it is hot.
