288xp build from a box of parts

Little more progress tonight. Test ran it. I have never run a 288, closest would be my ported Dolmar 7900. The 288 runs good for being low on compression, needs a piston and ring. Goal is to be a grunty, responsive lower RPM felling saw. Interesting looking mix of new and old parts. Still a few things to procure. Though it's been years since I've run a 288 and I could be wrong but seem to remember sometimes the Oiler Gear would strip out , not everyday but sometimes once in awhile

New piston and assorted other smalls showed up just in time for the long weekend.

Motoseal drying in place of the base gasket to decrease “squish”, the space between piston and cylinder roof so as to increase compression and therefore torque.

lookin at the baffle in the muffler tryin to decide if or how many or how large of holes to poke in it to get a little more flow but not reduce throttle response or get crazy loud.

I should have included in the first post that the first pic is for a chuckle, or I chuckle at myself. I run a machine and welding shop with all the tools/equipment and I have plenty of experience with heating and pressing things…but here at home I make do with a pink hairdryer, purple hammer, and some random chunks of bronze, etc. I think my grandpa painted his tools purple at some point because he got tired of them walking off. They make special tools and there are different methods, but I’m able to make do with what I have at home relaxing in the A/C.

We had a fundraiser raffle for a tree guy who got injured. I donated my Jonsered 630 for a prize. It was picked by a guy in Scotland who donated a port job. So, I picked his port job and send the extra cylinder that came with my 288 with his 630.

I fixed the stripped threads in the spare cylinder with an oversize insert. 3/4” NF.
Might fix the fins when it gets back.
