I think more of a catalpa, the wood has this particular look (same as Paulownia) but it doesn't keep its fruits in winter. The Paulownia has its dry shells hanging for a long time.
The wood of Ailanthus seems simpler, as I recall but I can be wrong, more classical spring/summer wood than this...
I guess the thorns are for (against) the big mammals. The small birds doesn't seem to care. Actually, they love these tangled nasty mess. Pyracantha is a good one too. They are even denser when conducted as an hedge, and there are still bird's nests in them.
Howthorn does that I believe, small red berries with a big pit/stone. Blackthorn too, dark violine berries, like a small olive.
