Here’s one of those, “Why didn’t I think of that?!” tricks. I have seen Elisabeth Ann Jacobsen do it with a sapling and strap but never thought about just poking a hole in it.
Back to back-leaners, stumbled on this.
Nice but a bit fiddly? I had thought before of running the wedge clear thru a tree.
On small trees, I usually face it, then wedge in from the side of the back cut…unless it’s leaning back, then reverse order.
In this case, no. I have seen it done on back leaners so the wedges can be installed in the back cut before the face cut is made because the face cut (tension side) would allow the tree to tip back more and pinch the saw when the back cut is made.
