Often times on repairs you need to factor in design flaws .I did a repair on my lady's daughters recently on a zero turn mower. It was plain as the azz on a goat it came screwed up from the factory .What were they thinking ?I laid enough enough 7018 to those broken welds to pass pressure hull...
I might suggest iron powder like 7014 and 7024 for those with buzz boxes .Again though you need clean metal .The best rusty metal is 6012 .6011 runs hot and 6013 they call farmer rod .6010 of course is a DC reverse rod .
7018 will lay down ,run over head or walk straight up smoother than anything made .However you have to have clean metal and dry rod at DC reverse polarity .The AC stuff made by Forney and others is okay but not as good as standard Hobart or Lincoln rod IMO .I use the AC stuff at the house...
Harley used socket brazed connections for decades .As far as rod I too use an old fridge or keep them in tubes .I must have 40-50 pounds of pure nickle all in tubes I got on a scrap pass after they stopped making cast iron engines .The 7018 is all in plastic containers which must work .I have no...
I might add on brazing the type alloy used makes a difference in strength . Ampco 18 which is silicon bronze is very strong and tough . I used this filler to build up a worm gear drive for a drill press made about 1920 .Used a lathe and a Bridgeport mill with a dividing head and a pocket...
Then comes one of my favorite interactions on web sites . I had made a slide pipe for a mini mac and the smallest gas tip was a number 4 and it was rough .I got heckled by one of many California know it alls . So I went to my shop and using a number 0 tip and gas welded two tin cans together...
You get into rusted steel the game changes .I just recently replaced the battery racks on two battery golf carts I bought for less than scrap prices .$50 each .At any rate you don't get "pretty " welds With a buzz box 6011 would be about the best option ran slightly cold . It will burn right...
That previous conversation about using cheaters try lookng through industrial bifocals,"triple grind "
though a standard small hood lens .I just took the damned things off but as of late went to a large self darkening hood lens which has worked out much better . You have to be able to see what...
WTH, a half cord a day two or 3 times a week .Doesn't take that long to get a winters supply .Speedy young men as yourself may get 5 cords a day for all I know .Good for you .
A sturdy one there isn't too much to go wrong with them .I have built a couple in the past .However I repaired a good many for others including two in the past few months .The first was a Chinese made deal somebody tinkered with that didn't know beans about hydraulics .Plus the Chinese are pizz...
Much ado about log splitters like it's the Indy 500 or something .It doesn't have to be all pretty like it's going to a rod and custom show .It doesn't have to be lightning fast .Not everybody can cobble up one from piles of junk laying around .It takes a dumpster diver with an...
The price certainly has gone up on those Lincoln "Tomb stone " machines .Perhaps not many know that the real old ones had copper windings that did not require a cooling fan .Fact in my garage I have an old Marquette buzz box that came over on the Mayflower which also is copper wound with no fan...
My neighbor has a splitter on a Bob Cat skid loader that works out well for him .He gets some monster logs ,tops of white oak .With an outside burner all it needs to do is fit through the door .I need to have them a lot smaller .It's a nice set up ,heat ,hot water but he goes through 3 times as...
I once stuck the transfer case of a Chevy 4 WD back together with nickel .It was in several pieces .I tacked it then heated it up and once it hit 350 just kept laying the rod to it on top of fire brick until it was done then dropped the whole thing in a bucket full of
lime .It was hot for...
As far as cast iron you have several options .Pre heat/post heat or no heat with stitch welds and peening .The later has worked the best for me over the years .To me Ni rod works the best although it's very costly to use .Depending some stainless rod could work like 304 or it might not .There...
When you get into those exotics like T1,Manteen , HY 80 (submarine pressure hulls ) etc the method can change a bit .Most require some pre heat and require "annealing beads" after the final pass .Some recommend stringer beads not wide weaves . Now that was 50 years ago and might have changed...
I don't tell anybody how to weld but were it me I'd stitch it back together with a fast freeze rod like 6011 and cap it off with 7018 .7014 would work though . If it's flat work and you have a gutsy enough welder 7024 really lays down the metal .They make a 7028 which is the iron powder version...
Some of those old buzz boxes with copper windings didn't need a cooling fan .However because of the age sometimes replacing parts can be a task finding them .In addition to what I have in my shop I inherited my dads old Marquette 200 amp that came over on the Mayflower .That damned thing was...
FWIW 3" ridged steel conduit is 3.090 ".Slightly less wall thickness the sced 40 pipe .It would be plenty strong enough for this project .Don't get threaded steel conduit confused with EMT ( thin wall ) because it's not the same stuff .
